Surrogate motherhood forges shifting bonds between a poor young Belgian woman and an upper-class English businesswoman in this bilingual femme two-hander. Director Bernard Bellefroid rings endless variations on how the two women come to tend to each other’s needs.
Young Melody decides to become a surrogate mother in return for a large sum of money. She was a homeless hairdresser and wants to start her own long dreamt-of-salon in ‘Melody’. The contracting mother, Emily, a rich Englishwoman, forces the slightly unstable Melody to come and live with her. While at first they are worlds apart, the two women are surprised to find themselves adopting one another. But when tragedy strikes, history threatens to repeat itself. Lucie Debay and Rachael Blake shared the actress award at Montreal for the film, which may find niche play abroad.
